The Danish Krone (DKK) is the official currency used in the Kingdom of Denmark, Faroe Islands, and Greenland. The Danish Currency is nicknamed the ‘Danish Crown’ in English, with the word Krone translated directly to English meaning crown. The Krone Exchange Rate is pegged against the Euro, which means the currency value is fixed against the value of the Euro. Denmark is a Scandinavian country comprised of the Jutland Peninsula and various islands. The Capital City, Cophenhagen is the largest city, home to royal palaces, cobbled streets and the Tivoli Garden.

Before you go
- Pack appropriately for scandinavian weather. Regardless of whether you are travelling during Summer or Winter, long sleeved clothes, jackets and pants are a must. The weather can change from a blissful clear blue sky to strong winds and overcast in a matter of a few days, so make sure you come prepared.
- Refill your water bottle rather than buy bottled water. Tap water in Denmark is remarkably clean and held to extremely high safety standards. Simply refill your water bottle when you go out; you will save both your money and help the environment!
- Book in advance. Many things in Denmark including bus tickets, train tickets and hotels can be bought for a huge discount if they are prepaid for online. In fact, the Danish rail system offers “orange tickets” online which need to be printed off in advance and cost almost a third of a typical ticket at the railway station!
- Rent a bike when in a city. Denmark is a cyclist’s heaven, complete with bike paths practically everywhere in the city. Not only is it fantastic for your health, but it is also reasonably cheap and convenient to hire, not to mention that it gives you the flexibility and freedom to explore the city at your own pace.
- Be prepared to spend over your budget. Denmark is a fairly expensive country to travel to and live in. Although cheaper options are most certainly available, the majority of essentials such as accommodation, food and transportation not only in Denmark, but most scandinavian countries, are quite expensive. So bring some extra cash and top up your travel card to ensure that you don’t run short of funds whilst overseas!
