The money

Currently circulating Indonesian banknotes date from 2000 (1,000 rupiah), 2001 (5,000 rupiah), 2004 (20,000 and 100,000 rupiah), 2005 (10,000 and 50,000 rupiah), 2009 (the new denomination of 2,000 rupiah), 2010 (revised version of the 10,000 rupiah), and 2011 (revised versions of the 20,000, 50,000 and 100,000 rupiah). The 1998–1999 notes have not been legal tender since 31 January 2008 (but will be exchangeable until 31 January 2018 at Bank Indonesia).

Before you go

  1. Buy plenty of bottled water. Drinking the tap water in Indonesia is not recommended so be sure to stock up. A great method is to purchase a large jug of water (around 5 litres from a convenience store or supermarket) and simply refill your water bottle whenever you go out. Indonesia can get very hot, so remember to always stay hydrated!
  2. Consider getting a SIM card. If you plan on travelling outside the major cities, you will quickly notice the lack of Wifi services available. Not only will a SIM card help you stay connected to the internet, google maps and loved ones throughout your trip, but it is incredibly cheap to get. A 10GB card could cost as little as $15 AUD in the right stores!
  3. Consider all your transportation options when travelling to different towns, islands or cites. Although catching a taxi ride from Bluebird Cabs (Indonesian Taxi company) is certainly an option, a very popular choice among both tourists and locals is to simply rent a scooter. Not only can it end up being cheaper for a days worth of transportation, but it gives you the freedom and independence to travel at your own pace and experience everything first hand. Not to mention that it is incredibly fun!
  4. Be mindful of your clothing. Indonesia is quite a conservative nation and is also home to a vast range of different ethnic and religious groups. Although the climate is quite warm, try to avoid wearing singlets or high-cut shorts if you plan on visiting any religious sites. Packing a scarf or sarong with you is a great way to quickly cover your legs or shoulders if needed without wearing long pants or shirts!
  5. Bring hand sanitiser and toilet paper when travelling. Get ready for squat toilets and an immediate absence of toilet paper if you plan on going outside major cities. In many public bathrooms, there is a lack of both toilet paper and soap; so bringing the essentials with you wherever you go will ensure that your hygiene is maintained.
  6. Consider tipping if you are given fantastic service. Although not mandatory, many locals will expect a tip for their services, especially in major cities. Some restaurants even have a 10% service charge that is added on top of the bill. Bringing some smaller notes when travelling and using it for tipping is an easy way to show your appreciation to the locals.
