The money
The currency used from the 17th Century to 1873 was the Riksdaler. The system was quite complex, with subunits consisting of mark, öres, pennings, skillingars, and runstyckens. In 1855, Sweden adopted the decimal system when they introduced a new version of the Riksdaler: the Risksdaler Riksmynt. The Swedish Krona first came to existence when Sweden agreed to join the Scandinavian Monetary Union in 1873, alongside Denmark and Norway. All countries involved fixed their respective currencies against gold at par with one another to create monetary stability. This union lasted until World War I, when the countries lost their pegs to gold. Sweden kept the Krona currency after the monetary union was disbanded.

Before you go
- Choose to travel during the time of the year that suits the activities you want to do. If you plan on hiking, island hopping or exploring Stockholm’s nightlife, it would be best to travel to Sweden during the summer months of June to August. However if you plan on heading up north and seeing the northern lights, participating in winter sports or enjoying the frosty white snow, it would be best to travel during November to March.
- Drink from the taps rather than plastic bottles. Sweden has extremely high health and environmental standards, which has led to the country having some of the cleanest tap water in the entire world. Not only is bottled water unnecessary, but with the population being extremely environmentally conscious, almost all of Sweden’s citizens only drink tap water as it is both clean and helps to reduce plastic pollution. Be sure to bring a bottle with you and refill it whenever you need more water!
- Consider purchasing a city tourism card. These passes give people the ability to access a city’s public transport system throughout the whole day and gives free access to almost every museum in the area. The more you use the card during your time in the city, the more money you will save!
- Always pack extra layers with you. Regardless of what time of year you go to Sweden in, it can get cold and wet in a matter of days. Clothing such as thermal underwear, leggings, puffer jackets and waterproof coats will prove invaluable during your trip. Not to mention that waterproof shoes, waterproof pants and rain covers for your backpack will also help you out immensely.
- Try to always purchase reusable essentials and dispose of waste, especially recyclables, in an appropriate way. Sweden is a very environmentally conscious country with a very strong green culture. For most of the country, recycling is not an option so make sure that any rubbish you have is cleaned, disposed of properly and recycled if possible.
